Ryan’s Sky Lore Drawings

Back in 2000, I created images of various mythic characters for the Arizona Science Center planetarium show, “Harvest Nights.” I designed the images to print to slide film, so the colors look a little odd reproduced below. Click on the small images to enlarge them.

From left to right in the first row of images, we have Demeter, Hades, and Zeus—all part of the story of Persephone’s abduction and descent into the Underworld, followed by her mother’s search. I won’t go into all the details here; suffice it to say that both female characters have been identified with the constellation Virgo.

From left to right in the second row of images, we have Chang-O, Hou Yi, and the Jade Emperor—characters from an Asian tale of the Moon Goddess. Again, I’ll skip the details, but Chang-O eats a magic pill that causes her to ascend to the Moon, and her husband, the skilled archer Hou Yi, pursues her to no avail. The two visit one another on an annual basis, however, around the time of the autumn Moon Festival.

I have sufficiently high-resolution versions of these images to print to film, in case you want to use them: I also created black backgrounds and separate masks. Please send me an email if you’re interested in using them.
